THE Prime Minister (Iyase) of Asaba, Obi Patrick Onyeobi, on Tuesday, informed the five major quarters of the Delta State Capital of turns to observe the traditional Ineh Festival.
In a ceremony that heralded the Ine Festival known as the Ika-Ine, Obi Onyeobi said that the dates for the festival had been approved by the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien and his cabinet.
Obi Onyeobi said that Umuonaje quarters would commence the Ineh festival on October 17, 2022, while Umuezei quarters and Ugbomanta quarters would follow suit on October 18, 2022, and October 19, 2022, respectively.
The Itucha Ikenga, Igbu-Agbo, and Itunya-Ube-Na-Nmili components of the Ineh Festival, according to the 2022 Asaba traditional calendar, would also hold on October 19, 2022, while the Igbaji-Eke Agu-na-Ajaji would conclude all festivals for the year.
Addressing our correspondent, Obi Onyeobi explained that the Ineh Festival served as another opportunity for the five quarters of Asaba to give thanksgiving to the Almighty God and the ancestral gods for their benevolence.
‘’Today (on Tuesday), we observe the formality of announcing the dates for each Ebo to pay their homage. At the end of this, we would mark the conclusion of the traditional calendar and keep looking to God for his blessings.
‘’The festival is also an opportunity for the warriors (Ogbus) and able-bodied men to show off their military prowess, demonstrating their readiness to defend Asaba and also to thank God for preserving their lives throughout the year’’ he said.
Obi Onyeobi, who was also the former Head of Service and Secretary to the defunct Bendel State Government, added that troupes from the various quarters would take their turns to pay homage to the principal warlords; the Odogwu and the Iyase to commemorate the Ineh festival.
The Ika-Ineh, performed by the Iyase, was graced by several Obis’ (red cap chiefs), the Ogbu traditional cult (warrior class), and other chiefs and sons of the Asaba Kingdom, and also featured the regal Egwuota dance.
