HE Delta State Government has reiterated its commitment towards ridding the state of drug abuse and ensuring a drug free society through a sensitisation programme against drug abuse, held recently in Asaba, Delta State capital.
The outreach programme to different parts of Asaba was under the auspices of the Delta State Drug Control Committee, whose Chairman, Pharm. (Mrs.) Helen Orie and the entire team were received at Ochelle Community in Asaba by Chairman of the Asaba Project Monitoring Committee, Ashikaegbe Iwebunakiti of Ahaba, Obi Chiweta Okonta.
Pharm. Orie lamented the increasing spate of drug abuse among young people across the country, saying efforts are in top gear to discourage the distressing habit, under the zero tolerance policy of the state government. She described the sensitization as timely, as there is now the need to assist those already involved in the habit of ingesting hard drugs through rehabilitation and counseling, while encouraging those not involved to steer clear of the act, as there is no benefit derivable from it.
Orie revealed that the state government has set up different programmes to make youths economically strong via the SMART Agenda, asking youths to take advantage of the empowerment programmes, rather than getting involved in dangerous acts, such as drug abuse and ending up destroying their lives irredeemably. She explained that the committee was mandated by the state government to eliminate the menace of drug abuse and ensure a saner environment. Members of the committee who spoke, included Saint Chris Owoeye, who explained that it was part of a new resolve on constant sensitization across the state, so as to rid the society of a ravaging drug menace, as many lives had been destroyed by it. Owoeye reiterated that the state government is fully committed to ensuring healthy, secure and prosperous lives for all Deltans.
Chairman of the Asaba Project Monitoring Committee, Ashikaegbe Iwebunakiti, agreed that the effect of drug abuse is disastrous, such as reducing the lifespan of the perpetrators. Hence, he encouraged the team not to relent in their efforts to curb the rising cases of drug abuse at all levels. The team also visited Idukpe Umuezei also in Asaba to sensitize the people on the dangers of drug abuse, of which one of the highlighted hazards is damage to vital organs.
