THE Civil Society Observers Coalition (CSOC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to destroy the hope and aspirations of Nigerians, but to conduct free, fair and credible Governorship and the State House of Assembly elections across the country today. The CSOC made this known via a press conference on Friday in the Delta State Capital, Asaba. Speaking on behalf of the Group, the founding Coordinator, Delta State Civil Society Community, Deacon Okezie Odugala, said that the last Presidential and National Assembly elections conducted two weeks ago by INEC fell short of expectations and were condemned by Nigerians and the international community. He explained that haven accepted its non-performance in the last elections, INEC should keep to its promise and conduct today’s elections with credibility, ensuring that, the logistics and technological concerns regarding the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) and the electoral reporting portal, function optimally without any form of compromise or excuse of inefficiency. While commending Nigerians and some of the presidential candidates for maintaining peace and order, and not taking laws into their hands after the last elections, he called on the judiciary to remain the hope of the common citizens by standing for justice and equity. Odugala called on security agents to remain unbiased and carry out their duties professionally without fear or favour and must not be seen intimidating the electorates which could cause voter apathy. He advised the electorates to eschew violence and conduct themselves as responsible citizens and urged political parties to operate responsibly, abide by the electoral laws of the country and contribute positively to the success of the elections. On his part, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Civil Society/Civic Engagement, Mr. Rex Anigoro, said that the elections were important to Nigerians, especially the citizens of Delta state, and as such, INEC should ensure that it was credible. He noted that the civil society had been informed that the police and military were being used to clamp down on the People Democratic Party’s (PDP) stalwart in the Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state, and as such, were calling on the relevant institutions to wade in. He said that the charade that happened in the last elections must not repeat itself, as the CSOC would resist and reject in its entirety if any illegal action was taken.
