DELTA State Government on Friday alerted the police, military and other law enforcement agencies to guard against the infiltration of their ranks by impostors who seek to undermine the process and outcome of the elections today. Addressing reporters in Asaba, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, accused the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) of plans to recruit fake army personnel to destabilize the governorship and House of Assembly polls. In Aniagwu’s words, ‘’we have it on solid intelligence that the APC and its governorship candidate have procured military uniforms to clothe some mercenaries as security personnel to undermine the electioneering process tomorrow (today). ‘’We are seizing this opportunity to inform the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Civil Defense, and other para-military agencies to take steps and ensure that their ranks and files are not infiltrated. ‘’They (law enforcement agencies) should look out for individuals who are not one of them that may, particularly in some villages and areas with high voting population, disguise themselves as security personnel. We are doing this because we must alert the security agencies and make them understand the desperation of the APC. ‘’Election is a democratic process. The best way to have a free and fair process is for the voters to free cast their ballot in favor of whomever they believe is capable of providing leadership. That choice is for the voters to make; it cannot be achieved through intimidation. ‘’So, we are urging the security agencies to continue assuring the public that they will up their game to provide the necessary security for voters who, by the grace of God, will approach the ballot to exercise their franchise of their preferred candidate. ‘’We are also asking members of the public to, please, come out and vote because the security agencies had given their assurances that they would be up and about and have the situation under control. ‘’However, we urge the security agencies not to rest on their oars because the desperation that we have seen (in the opposition) is something that we cannot imagine. Therefore, we ask them to prevent individuals who may want to disguise themselves as men of the military or police from undermining the election process. ‘’As a state government, we have already taken steps to ensure that the authorities, particularly security agencies, are going to do their jobs freely and allow everybody a free space to exercise their franchise,’’ he said. The state’s spokesman further alleged that the governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Ovie Omo- Agege, has taken undue advantage of his office as the Deputy President of the Senate to intimidate electorates, especially in the Delta Central Senatorial District. ‘’We urge the security agencies to caution any of their personnel that may be lured or whose services may be engaged to carry out such activity. We call on the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, and the Brigade Commanders to ensure that none of their personnel is deployed to carry out actions inimical to the democratic process or that is unlawful.
