Says Opposition Took Advantage To Make False Claims
BY PATRICK MGBODO
THE Delta State Government, on Thursday, cleared the air on why the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, excused himself from the Arise News debate.
Rt. Hon Oborevwori , currently the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, was among the candidates of frontline political parties in the March 18, 2023 polls absent at the television debate.
Addressing journalists in Asaba, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, explained that the PDP governorship candidate, Hon Oborevwori, had a crowded schedule with the grassroots ahead of the polls tomorrow.
According to Aniagwu, ‘’We (PDP) had looked forward to a debate before the postponement of the elections, which ought to have been held on March 11. Incidentally, that did not happen. So, we began reviewing what happened on February 25 (presidential elections), where another party made inroads.
‘’Therefore, we needed to renew our campaigns and interface with the people, which is what we have been doing—to let our brothers and sisters know that we cannot take away this DNA (PDP) that has given us so much peace and development in the state. This development meant the governorship candidate (of the PDP) needed to interface more with the people.
‘’We value debates, and we are quite pleased with Arise News Television. What they did to organize a debate was right. Still, incidentally, the time that the invitation came was not convenient enough for us to proceed, having scheduled several engagements (interface) with people across the state.
‘’So, it was not convenient for us to take advantage of that auspicious event, not because we wanted to run away from the debate. Hence, that paved the way for some of them in opposition to tell stories that are at variance with the reality’’ he said.
The statespokesman, accompanied by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Mr. Olise Ifeajika, chided the candidates of the Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for making claims at the debate that demonstrated their ignorance of developments in the state. ‘’They just want to go to TV and make it look like they have something to offer Deltans. If indeed they have anything to offer, they should have, before now, visited the grassroots.
‘’So, when they begin to tell stories and make claims that nothing is happening in the state, it becomes clear that they are not in tune with the reality,’’ Aniagwu said, even as he expressed confidence in the candidacy of Hon Oborevwori to consolidate on the development trajectory of the state in the last eight years.
Reacting to other issues, Mr. Aniagwu implored Deltans not to fall for the antics of the opposition, who he said, had engaged the services of propagandists on social media to churn out bogus allegations and blackmail the state government.
While validating the information commissioner, the CPS, Mr. Ifeajika, rebuked the governorship candidate of the SDP, Chief Kenneth Gbagi, for making unfounded allegations, stressing that the legacies of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa across all sectors of the economy were glaring for Deltans to testify.
