TO enhance effective community policing in Onicha-Uku, an agrarian community in Aniocha North Local Government Area, the vigilante group has urged the state government to fund security services in the community so as to checkmate crimes effectively.
Speaking to newsmen, the Chairman of Onicha- Uku Vigilante services, Mr. Felix Onuwa said that he had personally sponsored most of the group activities as the community leaders had failed to comply with the payment of stipends to security officials since the past three years.
He said that from the onset of their services, the community was paying N5,000 to the officers each, but lately the payment stopped, even as they were still safeguarding their community, adding that the payment would give officers morale to work effectively.
Onuwa said that he encouraged the officers to come and guard their community not minding how much the leaders paid to them, adding that the police, sometime ago invaded his house and collected their light weapons used for operations.
He mentioned that despite their selfless efforts to police the community, certain leaders were pestering them, alleging that they were not doing their job effectively and crimes were committed by his officers.
Onuwa debunked the allegation and admonished the community leaders to provide security equipment to enable them fight crime, adding that they had succeeded in curbing the attack of Fulani herdsmen and kidnappers threatening farmers in their farmland.
He called on his people to embrace love, protect the community and provide meaningful information that would lead to foster peace and harmony in the area, adding that the community should make logistics available for the security to work effectively.
