NO fewer than 50 students of Okpanam High School, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State, have benefitted from the Rotary Club of Asaba Metropolitan mentoring and vocational training program.
The Vocational Service Chairman, Rtn. Joseph Agbalanze, who was present at the training, said that having a vocation/skill implied being able to initiate an occupation often outside of one’s academic qualification. “I have always told students that having a certificate is not enough for the Nigerian economy today; having a skill in addition to the certificate is crucial to generating a decent source of income. It is commendable that the club has assisted those who took part in the free vocational training in achieving this,” Agbalanze said.
The s tudent s we r e trained on “Soap and antiseptic making” by Rtn. Genevieve. U. Emeremgini and were also granted a career talk by the Club’s Past President, Rtn. Augustus Adomagbo, who lectured them on possible career options.
Rtn. Adomagbo, a bank official, reminisced on his secondary school days and stressed the importance of education and career talks, while commending the students for taking good advantage of the rare opportunity provided by the club. “The purpose of this mentoring and career talk is to impact on the young ones. I attended a village school where we had no English or Mathematics teacher but made excellent grades at the University because I was determined. There are so many career opportunities available for both Science and Art students but one has to be studious to excel in them,” he advised.
He encouraged them not to be deterred by their financial background as God was capable of crowning their efforts with success, while the club was also willing to sponsor those with outstanding performances into the higher institution.
In an interview, Rtn. Adomagbo told newsmen that the training, which fulfilled the Rotary Vocational Service Month, was imperative in the lives of all teenagers.
“This vocational training which would ordinarily have cost these students was given freely so they can have a skill outside their academic qualification which could one day put food on their table. Of course, mentoring is important to guide them on the right career path. Also, in this era, teenagers should be encouraged, while getting a degree to adopt vocational training, even digital skills like Python, Coding, etc,” he said. The students, who benefitted from the training, were full of thanks to the club for the opportunity to participate in such a valuable exercise.
