THE Delta State Government on Tuesday challenged stakeholders in the entertainment industry to arouse enthusiasm among the populace for positive change ahead of the forthcoming elections.
To this end, the state Directorate of Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with the Delta-91 Initiative, organized a one-day workshop for playwrights, dramatists, songwriters, singers, filmmakers, promoters, and the academia.
Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Engr. Lawrence Ejiofor, said that the event dubbed “Exploring the Tools of Entertainment towards the Education and Enlightenment of the Populace” was apt to enlighten Nigerians to participate in the electoral process.
Ejiofor, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Mrs. AngalerePrest-Umukoro, also stressed the potential of the entertainment industry as an alternative to the depletion of national crude oil reserves.
He challenged the stakeholders to deploy their talents in promoting society’s ethics, norms, and cultural values, adding that entertainment professionals should produce films that would readdress the minds of the younger generation to the Nigerian values and standards.
Addressing The Pointer, the workshop coordinator, Comrade Alex Akpuh, said that the seminar was necessary to bring stakeholders in the entertainment industry to discuss how to move the industry forward.
“Therefore, it is vital for dramatists, playwrights, songwriters, singers, filmmakers, show business promoters, and the academia to pay more attention to issues that will impact positively on the lives of the people and society at large in their scripts, songs, lectures, and performances.
“The state government is aware of the important role the entertainment sector plays in the social, political, and economic awareness and development and has remained resolute in promoting the sector’ he said.
Some of the lectures delivered at the workshop include “Film as an Effective Channel for Social Change” by Earliece Ossa and “The Theatre Educates, The Theatre Entertains. So, the Theatre Must Create Jobs,” delivered by Israel Wekpe.
